Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy and is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. In the east, Sicily is separated from Calabria by the Strait of Messina. The capital of the region is Palermo. Sicily is one of the most seismically active regions in Europe. Among the most famous is the volcano Etna. Other now dormant volcanoes form the archipelago of the Aeolian Islands. Part of the Aeolian Islands is the small island of Stromboli in the Tyrrhenian Sea, formed by the eponymous, still active volcano.
