Valley of the Temples

Údolí chrámů

On the south-west coast of Sicily, near the town of Agrigento, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world - the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi).

This fascinating site is not only a testament to the ancient Greek civilisation in Sicily, but also a marvel of history and architecture that will literally leave you spellbound.

History carved in stone

the Valley of the Temples was founded in the 6th century BC, when the Greek colony of Akragas ruled here. Founded by the Greeks, the city of Akragas was one of the most important and wealthy centers of the ancient world. Its power and wealth are reflected in the monumental buildings that can be admired in the valley today.

At its greatest glory, Akragas was considered one of the most beautiful cities in the ancient world. The famous Greek poet Pindaros even called it "the most beautiful city inhabited by mortals". These words resonate today with every step a visitor takes among the massive columns of the temples.

Wonders of ancient architecture

the Valley of the Temples boasts several surviving temples, each a testament to the mastery of ancient builders. The most famous of these is the Temple of Concordia, one of the best preserved Doric temples in the world. Its majestic columns and symmetrical structure are a testament to the technical skill and artistic flair of the ancient Greeks. The temple has become a symbol of harmony and enduring beauty that has survived the ages.

Another important temple is the Temple of Hera, which was dedicated to the goddess of marriage. Although it was partially destroyed during the later wars, its ruins still fascinate visitors with their imposing size and an atmosphere that evokes a glorious past. The temple contained altars where offerings were made to the gods in an effort to ensure the protection of the city.

Also not to be forgotten is the Temple of Zeus, one of the largest temples in the ancient world. Although only the foundations and ruins of this monumental temple remain today, its original size and grandeur were breathtaking. The temple was built in honour of Zeus, the highest of the Greek gods, and was intended to emphasise the strength and power of the city of Akragas.

the Valley of the Temples is not only a place of history, but also an oasis of natural beauty. Here you can wander through the olive and almond groves that surround the ancient ruins and give the place a special charm. In spring, when the trees are in bloom, the whole valley is transformed into a colourful paradise, contrasting with the quiet grandeur of the ancient temples.
