This magical stretch of coastline can be found near the town of Realmonte on the south-west coast of the island.
The Scala dei Turchi are no ordinary cliffs. Their surface is made up of limestone and claystone, giving the cliffs their unique white colour, which contrasts with the azure sea to create a breathtaking scenery. As the sun sets, its rays paint the white rock in subtle shades of orange and pink, creating a view that seems otherworldly. While some tourists head here for the beautiful views, others can't resistdescend the cliff down to the sea to swim in the clear water and experience this amazing contrast of colours for themselves.
The story of the stairs and the pirates
The name "Turkish Steps" did not just come about by chance. Legend has it that in ancient times, when Saracen pirates (often referred to as Turks) attacked the coast of Sicily, they used these cliffs as a hiding place. The steps served as a natural harbour and refuge from which the pirates could launch their raids on coastal villages.
A beauty in need of protection
Over time, the Scala dei Turchi has become a symbol of natural beauty and tranquillity that attracts tourists from all over the world. Unfortunately, the more people visit the place, the more it is threatened by erosion and damage. Due to its fragility, some areas of the Turkish Steps are closed to the public so that they can be protected. At the same time, local authorities and conservationists are trying to find ways to preserve the site for future generations without losing its magical appeal.
