Catania is located on the eastern coast of Sicily on the Ionian Sea, at the foot of Mount Etna volcano. It is the second largest city on the island and has a rich history dating back to antiquity. Its landmark is the Cathedral of Saint Agatha in the Piazza del Duomo, where the famous Fountain of the Elephant, the symbol of the city, also stands. The main street, Via Etnea, overlooks the volcano and is a centre of commerce and culture. Catania is famous for its Baroque architecture, which was restored after the earthquake of 1693. The city has a bustling port and La Pescheria market, famous for its fresh fish. Nearby are beaches of black volcanic sand. The University of Catania is one of the oldest in Italy. The city has a rich cultural life and hosts festivals dedicated to Saint Agatha, its patron saint.
