Liguria is located on the Ligurian coast in north-west Italy. It is Italy's third smallest region, with the capital city of Genoa, which is a major port of Italy.
The coastline is mostly rocky, but there are picturesque coves as well as long sandy or pebbly beaches. The proximity of places such as Monaco, Monte Carlo, San Remo and Cannes also adds to Liguria' s appeal. The whole area is south-facing and so the weather is exceptionally sunny.
Typical of the area are the bustling resorts, palm tree lined promenades, clear seas and pebble beaches. Liguria also attracts visitors with its many picturesque ancient towns, manor houses, religious buildings and fascinating landscapes. The region is made up of two parts - from Genoa to the west it is called Ponente, and from Genoa to the south it is called Levante. The most famous resorts are San Remo, Imperia, Diano Marina, Pietra Ligure and San Bartolomeo. The rocky landscape with picturesque coves in the south of Liguria, called Cinque Terre, is definitely worth a visit.
