Imperia is the westernmost Italian city in the province of Liguria. It is bordered to the north by Piedmont, to the east by the province of Savona and to the west by France. The south of Imperia is bathed by the Ligurian Sea. The town has approximately 41 500 inhabitants. The name Imperia is derived from the name of the river Impero, which separates the former enemy villages of Porto Maurizio and Oneglia. Nowadays these villages are merged into one town. The area around Imperia is known as the "Riviera dei Fiori", which is characterised by picturesque bays, harbours and valleys.
