The village was almost completely destroyed by the strong earthquake that struck Liguria on 23 February 1887. Due to the damage, Bussana was abandoned and the inhabitants were relocated to the nearby newly built village of Bussana Nuova. In the 1960s, however, it began to come to life thanks to a group of artists and free thinkers who found refuge there and transformed the ruins into a beautiful art colony.
Bussana Vecchia is not a classic village with an official self-government. Because it was long considered an illegal settlement, many artists and residents lived here without official ownership or infrastructure. Even today, life here is governed by specific rules where communities and residents manage the area together.
Bussana Vecchia has no formal water or sewage system. Residents have to improvise and most houses have their own water supplies. This contributes to the authentic atmosphere of the place, where the old and the modern mix.
What makes Bussana Vecchia so special is the fascinating combination of ancient history with modern art. Houses made of broken stone, which once had to be abandoned by the inhabitants, have been gradually renovated and converted into studios, galleries and workshops. Walking through the narrow, winding streets, where every step breathes history, you will encounter fascinating sculptures, paintings, ceramics and other works of art - each reflecting the soul and creativity of its creator.
The village lives its own rhythm, away from the hectic world, offering visitors a place to contemplate and be inspired.
Bussana Vecchia is not only a paradise for art lovers, but also a place where time seems to stand still. While the modern world beats a short distance away, the village retains its authentic charm without the distractions of technology or modern hustle and bustle. When you look out over the panorama of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, you'll understand why people keep coming back.
A visit to Bussana Vecchia is also a way to discover the adventurous spirit of community life. Here, villagers - whether artists or artisans - live in close connection with nature, sharing their skills and supporting each other. This place, though small and seemingly isolated, has strong international connections. It attracts visitors from all over the world, who come here to find inspiration, admire the art and sometimes even get involved in the local community. For those who long to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and seek a peaceful retreat, Bussana Vecchia is a real treasure hidden in the heart of Liguria.
