San Fruttuoso is a picturesque bay hidden among the rocks and Mediterranean vegetation on the Ligurian coast, between Portofino and Camogli. The place is famous for its monastic history, its beautiful beach and the statue of Christ of the Abyss (Cristo degli Abissi), which is located under the sea.

Monastery of San Fruttuoso

The main landmark is the Benedictine monastery of San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte, whose origins date back to the 10th century. The monastery has served a variety of purposes, from a monks' retreat to a pirate's lair to the seat of the Doria family. Today, it is managed by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) and visitors can admire its Romanesque architecture and its peaceful courtyard overlooking the sea.

Inside the monastery, there were rare frescoes, but many of them have been damaged by dampness or during various rebuilds over the centuries. Some of the remains can still be seen in the monastery.

The Abbey and the Bay of San Fruttuoso

The abbey includes a bell tower, which is located above the cloister courtyard and has elegant arched windows, typical of Romanesque architecture. According to legend, during one of the pirate attacks, the bell from this bell tower was thrown into the sea to prevent it falling into the hands of the raiders. The monks feared that it might be melted down and used to make weapons. After some time, however, the sea "returned" the bell - it was reportedly found washed up on the shore near the monastery. The monks considered it a miracle and the bell was re-hung. Unfortunately, the original bell has not survived to this day.

Statue of Christ of the Abyss

One of San Fruttuoso's biggest attractions is the bronze statue of Cristo degli Abissi (Christ of the Abyss), which is located about 15 metres below sea level. It was placed here in 1954 as a tribute to all the divers and sailors who found their destiny in the sea. The statue with its arms outstretched symbolizes protection and peace. Every year in August, a solemn mass is held at the statue in conjunction with a night dive, when divers lay wreaths at the feet of Christ and torches illuminate the surface of the water.

How to get there?

This secluded cove is only accessible by sea or on foot. Boat connections operate from Camogli, Rapallo and Portofino, with the cruise offering spectacular views of the rugged Ligurian coastline. The other option is a hike through the Parco di Portofino, which leads through olive groves, pine forests and past steep cliffs with breathtaking panoramas. The walk from Portofino takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, and a little longer from Camogli.

Due to the limited availability of the site, it is advisable to plan your visit early, especially in high season when the monastery is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims.

San Fruttuoso is one of the most picturesque places in Liguria. It combines history, nature and the unique atmosphere of a secluded bay where you can swim, explore the underwater world or just relax in an authentic setting away from the tourist crowds.
