Nestled in the foothills of the Alps in Lombardy, Lago di Como is synonymous with romance, beauty and tranquillity. Italy's third largest lake attracts tourists thanks to its picturesque towns, crystal clear water and varied activities. If you're planning a holiday on this lake, here are some tips on how to really enjoy it.

Things to see

Bellagio

Bellagio, often referred to as the "pearl of Lago di Como", is located at a strategic point where the lake divides into two arms. This little town will charm you with its picturesque streets lined with shops and cafés. Don't miss a visit to Villa Melzi, a beautiful historic mansion surrounded by extensive gardens. Walking among the exotic plants, ponds and statues, you'll get unparalleled views of the lake. For a romantic evening, book a table at one of the local restaurants where you can sample the specialities of Lombardy.

Varenna - Quiet romance

Varenna, quieter and less touristy than Bellagio, is the ideal place for those looking for relaxation and a romantic atmosphere. The town is famous for its colourful houses that rise above the lake. Take a stroll along the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, or Lovers' Path, which offers spectacular views of the water. The medieval Castello di Vezio dominates the town and offers panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Como - Heart of the Lake

The town of Como, which gave the lake its name, is the main gateway to the area. The historic centre is full of narrow streets, squares and elegant cafes. One of the most important sights is the Duomo di Como, a Gothic cathedral with a magnificent façade and a richly decorated interior. Another attraction is the cable car to Mount Brunate, which takes you above the city in minutes. The view of the lake from the top is absolutely unforgettable, especially at sunset.

Tremezzo - Villa Carlotta

The town of Tremezzo is home to one of Lago di Como's most visited sights - Villa Carlotta. This historic villa was built in the 18th century and today serves as a museum and botanical garden. The interior of the villa is filled with works of art, while the gardens will enchant you with a rich collection of flowers, shrubs and trees. The gardens are designed to offer the most beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Things to experience

Cruise on the lake

One of the best ways to discover the beauty of Lago di Como is to cruise on its surface. A boat service connects all the main towns and villages around the lake, allowing you to comfortably explore more places in one day. For those looking for more privacy, hiring a private boat is ideal, on which you can enjoy quiet moments and views without the crowds.

Water sports and relaxation

Lake Como is ideal for water sports enthusiasts. If you like active holidays, try paddleboarding, windsurfing or canoeing. For a quieter experience, you can rent a pedal boat or simply relax on one of the many beaches. A popular spot is the beach in the town of Lenno, where you can enjoy a beautiful afternoon overlooking the lake.

Hiking and cycling

The surroundings of Lago di Como offer many hiking and cycling trails that lead through the stunning countryside. Popular hikes include the climb to the top of Monte Grona, which offers panoramic views of the lake and the Alps. If you like quieter walks, take the trails around Bellagio or Tremezzo.

Visit film locations

Thanks to its beauty, Lago di Como is often featured in films. The most famous film location is the Villa del Balbianello, which was used in films such as "Casino Royale" or "Star Wars: Episode II". The villa is located on a small peninsula and is accessible either on foot or by boat. The tour includes not only the interior of the villa, but also the beautiful gardens.

Things to try

Next time you head to Lago di Como, be sure to try the fresh fish from the lake, the local pasta and the delicious wines from the surrounding vineyards. We recommend trying the Missoltino, a traditional dish of fish that is sun-dried and then grilled. It is often served with polenta, another local speciality.

Also try Pizzocheri, a pasta made from buckwheat flour and served with potatoes, cheese and butter. To accompany this, enjoy a glass of wine from the Valtellina region, known for its excellent red wines.

Practical tips

Are you hesitant about the best time to visit the lake? Spring and autumn are ideal, as the weather is pleasant and there are fewer tourists. Summer is good for water sports, but be aware of the higher prices.

The easiest way to get to the lake is a combination of a plane to Milan and a train to Como. You can easily get around the lake by boat or car.

Choose from a wide range of accommodation, from luxury hotels to cosy guesthouses. Accommodation with lake views is popular.
