History and architecture
The villa was built in the 18th century and its original name was Villa Arcimboldi, after the family that owned it. In 1787, the villa was transferred to a prominent Venetian nobleman who rebuilt it. After several other changes of ownership, including Italian aristocrats, the villa was purchased in 1974 by the Italian businessman and art collector Gianfranco Della Vigna, who also built the gardens in the style of an English park.
Today, the villa is popular not only for its historical importance, but also for its role in culture, for its architectural beauty, and of course for its renowned views of Lake Como.
Gardens and surroundings
The gardens of Villa del Balbianello are as fascinating as the villa itself. They are spread out on terraces overlooking the lake and offer a unique view of the surrounding countryside. A walk through these gardens is like a walk in another world - with carefully manicured paths, ancient trees and greenery that contrasts with the blue surface of the lake.
Here you can stroll up steps lined with flowers and shrubs that lead to panoramic views. The gardens are also home to historic statues and fountains that add to the elegance of the place.
Film location
Villa del Balbianello is not only a tourist gem, but also a popular film location. It has been used as a filming location for several famous movies, including the 2006 Bond film Casino Royale, where the villa became the setting for a romantic moment between James Bond and Vesper Lynd. This fact is attracting another wave of people interested in visiting this magical place.
Interior of the villa
Villa del Balbianello offers a unique insight into the world of Italian history, culture and art, as the interiors preserve the atmosphere of aristocratic life.
The villa is furnished with elegant and luxurious furniture, antiques, art objects and rare collections. Each room has its own unique character and charm.
One of the most impressive rooms in the villa is the library. It contains an extensive collection of old books, maps and manuscripts that once belonged to Gianfranco Della Vigna, the last private owner. The library is a testimony to his intellectual interests and his passion for travel and adventure. Della Vigna was also a passionate traveller and lover of adventure, which is why you can also see old maps, ship models, navigational instruments and souvenirs from his travels around the world.
The main halls and lounges of the villa are decorated with magnificent frescoes, fireplaces and antique furniture. Each room is furnished to preserve its historic charm, yet provide visitors with an authentic glimpse of upper-class life in centuries past.
Interesting fact: the heritage of Gianfranco Della Vigna
After the death of Gianfranco Della Vigna in 1988, the villa was bequeathed to the FAI(Fondo Ambiente Italiano), which takes care of its maintenance and makes it accessible to the public. Thanks to this, you can enjoy this unique space in all its glory, including unique exhibits that otherwise remain hidden in the collections.
So if you're planning a visit to Villa del Balbianello, it's definitely worth taking a look not only at the gardens, but also at the villa itself.
Today, Villa del Balbianello is open to the public and serves not only as a tourist attraction, but also as a venue for weddings and private events thanks to its unique location and unmistakable character.
