Ischia, a green island in the Gulf of Naples, is one of the most popular destinations in southern Italy. The most common way to reach the island is by ferry. How does the whole process work, which companies sail and what to look out for?

When travelling to your holiday on the thermal island of Ischia , you will need to take a ferry from the mainland to the island. If you travel by bus booked through Italieonline CK, you don't have to worry about anything and follow the instructions of the delegate or bus driver. But if you're driving yourself, we have some useful tips for you.

Where to board the ferry?

The most common departure point for Ischia is Naples or the smaller port of Pozzuoli, which is about 25km west of Naples.

  • From Naples, ferries and speedboats (hydrofoils) leave from the ports of Calata Porta di Massa (classic ferries) and Molo Beverello (pedestrian speedboats, no car transport).
  • From Pozzuoli only classic ferries operate.

The companies providing the service

Several companies operate on the Naples-Ischia route:

Ferries (passenger and car transport)

Caremar - state carrier, reliable, with regular services.

Medmar- private operator, with multiple connections from Pozzuoli.

Fast boats (pedestrian only)

Caremar

Alilauro- Private company, often has more modern boats.

Sailing times and departure times

The exact timetable varies according to the season - there are more sailings in summer than in winter. We recommend checking directly on the carriers' websites (e.g. caremar.it or medmarnavi.it).

ROUTE TYPE OF BOAT SAILING HOURS FREQUENCY
Naples - Ischia Porto ferry approx. 60 - 90 minutes every 2-3 hours
Naples - Ischia Porto speedboat ccca 50 minutes approx. 8 times a day
Pozzuoli - Ischia Porto ferry approx. 60 minutes every 2 hours

How much does it cost?

  • Person without car: 12-20 € for the ferry, 20-30 € for the speedboat.
  • Car: approx. 45-60 €, depending on length and season.
  • Luggage above standard size (suitcase): may be charged (approx. 2-5 €).

How does it work in practice?

We recommend making a reservation first, especially in summer. It can be made online or directly at the port. Then you check-in - either at the counter or electronically, depending on the company. And then it's boarding - if you have a car, the on-board assistants will direct you. Passengers on foot walk through the terminal as they would at an airport. There is usually a bar, toilets and sometimes air-conditioned lounges during the cruise.

Practical information

You will need to show the registration document of your car.
ATTENTION: some ferries also stop at Procida and then continue on to Ischia.
It is recommended to arrive at the ferry terminal in the morning in high season, due to the fact that tickets for the ferry are sold out.

July and August are extremelybusy, reservations required.

Waves and Weather: In high winds (especially in winter), connections may be cancelled.

Car ban for tourists: in high season (April to October) there is a partial ban on cars registered outside the Campania region on Ischia. Unless you have accommodation with parking confirmation, it is better to leave your car on the mainland.
