Tarquinia: Gateway to the world of the Etruscans

Traquinia

Tarquinia, a charming town in the Lazio region, is hidden between the Italian hills and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past, into the life of the Etruscans, as well as beautiful architecture and surroundings.

Tarquinia is one of the most important historical sites in all of Italy. It lies approximately 90 kilometres northwest of Rome, and is especially known for its rich heritage from the time of the Etruscan civilisation.

Immerse yourself in history

Tarquinia is a place where history merges with the present. The city is one of the main centres of Etruscan civilisation and its heritage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The most important tourist destination in Tarquinia is undoubtedly the necropolis of Monterozzi. With more than 6,000 tombs, Monterozzi is one of the largest and most important burial sites of the Etruscan civilisation. The murals in the tombs, which depict scenes from everyday life, mythology and funeral rites, are not only an artistic treasure but also a key to understanding this ancient culture.

The city is also home to the Etruscan National Museum (Museo Nazionale Tarquiniense). Housed in the magnificent Vitelleschi Palace, it is home to countless artefacts that reveal the secrets of Etruscan life. The archaeological museum, divided into three floors, houses a collection of sarcophagi, finds from Villanovanto the Roman period, and painted tombstones and frescoes can be admired in the air-conditioned space.the museum also displays a very famous piece, the world's unique Winged Horse, from the Queen's Altar.

The Cathedral of Santa Margherita is also worth a visit. This 13th century cathedral is an important example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Its interior is richly decorated with frescoes and offers a peaceful place to meditate and admire art.

We also recommend the Palazzo dei Priori. This 15th-century palace serves as the town hall and is one of the city's main landmarks. Its imposing architecture and historic atmosphere attract many visitors.
