La Mortella Garden can be found on the island of Ischia near the Bay of Naples. It was founded in 1956 on a rocky slope of volcanic origin. The Waltons have created an environment that is unique for its combination of Mediterranean and exotic vegetation. William Walton sought inspiration for his music here, while his wife Susanna devoted her time to building this natural paradise.
What you can see here
The two-hectare garden is divided into two main sections: the Lower Garden (Giardino Inferiore) and the Upper Garden (Giardino Superiore). Here you will find more than 800 species of plants, among which exotic species such as palms, orchids, lotuses or tropical trees stand out.
In addition to flora, the garden offers aesthetic experiences, such as:
- Water features: picturesque ponds and fountains, some of which also feature water lilies and other aquatic plants.
- The Victoria Amazonica Greenhouse: a greenhouse dedicated to giant water lilies from the Amazon rainforest.
- Viewing terraces: offers spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding landscape.
- Concert Hall: In summer, classical music concerts are held here in honour of William Walton.
