On the south-west coast of Italy, in the Calabria region, is the Arco Magno - a monumental rock arch that forms a unique gateway to a picturesque bay with crystal clear waters. And not just any..

The magic of a hidden bay

The Arco Magno is not just a rock formation, but also the entrance to the small beach of Spiaggia di Enea, which is only accessible on foot or by boat. Its name refers to the mythological hero Aeneas, who after the fall of Troy wandered the Mediterranean in search of a new homeland. Legend has it that when Aeneas and his fleet sailed along the Calabrian coast, he was caught in a violent storm. High waves and strong winds threatened the ships, so the goddess Venus, his mother, intervened and led him to a sheltered bay - Spiaggia di Aenea, or "Aeneas' Beach". The locals believe that the water in this bay has magical powers - those who bathe in it will gain the strength to overcome obstacles and persevere in pursuit of their dreams, just as Aeneas did on his journey to found Rome.

The beach is surrounded by high limestone cliffs and, thanks to the arch that partially protects it, the sea here plays with all shades of blue and turquoise.

How to get to Arco Magno

The most common starting point is the town of San Nicola Arcella, from where a path leads over the cliffs. The path is relatively short but requires caution as some sections are rocky and steep. Alternatively, the arch can be reached by boat from the town of Praia a Mare, which offers a spectacular view of the coast from the sea.

Ideal time to visit

The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon, when you can avoid the biggest crowds of tourists. The morning sun renders the rock arches in golden tones, and in the evening you can again experience an amazing sunset, when the reflections of the light shimmer on the surface of the sea.

A natural paradise worth discovering

Arco Magno is a perfect example of Calabria' s natural beauty - the wild coastline, azure sea and rock formations create a scenery that will be etched in your memory. Whether you come here on foot or by boat, you're in for a unique experience.
