The basilica was built in the 9th century as the final resting place of Saint Mark the Evangelist, whose relics were brought to Venice from Alexandria.it stands in St Mark's Square(Piazza di San Marco), next to the Doge's Palace. The current appearance of the building dates from the 11th century, when it was rebuilt in a grand style with rich decoration. Over the centuries, the basilica was gradually enlarged and decorated.
The interior of the basilica is covered with more than 4,000 m² of glass mosaics (partly with gold inlay) that tell stories from the Bible and reflect light in beautiful hues. The golden background symbolizes the heavenly glow and gives the space a mystical touch.

One of the most precious parts of the basilica is the golden altar panel of the Pala d'Oro, decorated with gems and enamel paintings. It is a masterpiece of Byzantine art.
On the balcony above the main entrance of the basilica you can see the four bronze horses of St. Mark. These are ancient statues, probably dating from ancient Rome or Constantinople. The original (gilded) horses are now kept inside the basilica, while copies stand outside.

Architecture lovers will appreciate the basilica's combination of Byzantine, Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its five domes, ornate arches and richly decorated facade reflect influences from both East and West.
