The City of Towers
San Gimignano is best known for its characteristic towers, which once served as a symbol of the wealth and power of local families. Of the original 72 towers, 14 remain today, but the town still has the feel of a "medieval Manhattan". The tallest of them, the Torre Grossa, reaches up to 54 metres and offers breathtaking views of the city and the rolling Tuscan countryside. The climb up the ancient stairs is well worth it, as the panorama that awaits you at the top is breathtaking.
Cathedral full of colour
Don't miss a visit to the local Collegiata di San Gimignano, which houses rare frescoes depicting biblical stories. Once inside, you'll find yourself in a gallery of masters of medieval art. Frescoes such as the Last Judgement and the Life of Saint Fina will draw you into a world full of colour and emotion.
You will find the Cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo, one of the most important squares in San Gimignano and the centre of the spiritual and political life of the city. This square is directly adjacent to the Piazza della Cisterna and offers visitors not only historic buildings but also a wonderful atmosphere.
Piazza della Cisterna: The heart of San Gimignano
A stroll through the narrow streets takes you to Piazza della Cisterna, a square lined with stone buildings where authentic Italian life takes place every day. This is the place to enjoy a coffee or the famous gelato, which has won the award for the best gelato in the world here. Whether you are looking for a quiet place to sit or the lively atmosphere of the markets, this square has its own unmistakable charm.
Tasting Vernaccia: the treasure of Tuscan vineyards
A visit to San Gimignano would not be complete without a wine tasting. The region is home to the famous white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano, which has been produced here since the Middle Ages. On a visit to one of the local vineyards, you can sample a glass of this dry and refreshing wine while enjoying the view of the vineyards that surround the town.
Museum of Torture
For the more adventurous among you, there is the Museum of Torture, which reveals the dark side of medieval history. The exhibits on display showcase the various methods of torture that were used to punish crimes in the past. While a visit to the museum can be a bit chilling, it is an interesting look at medieval methods of administering law and justice.
