Gallipoli, literally "beautiful town" (from the Greek kalé pólis), is located in the Apulia region of southern Italy. The town is surrounded by the clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Divided into the historic old town (Centro Storico) and the new part (Borgo Nuovo), Gallipoli offers a fascinating mix of history, culture and natural beauty.

The historic centre: a labyrinth in the middle of the sea

The old town is situated on a small island, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, you will be captivated by the massive Castello Angioino-Aragonese, which has protected the harbour since the Middle Ages. Today the castle is a museum and hosts exhibitions and cultural events.

Walking through the narrow streets of the historic centre, surrounded by walls, you will come across the richly decorated baroque churches, the most famous of which is the Cattedrale di Sant' Agata. Its façade, decorated with statues, and its interior decoration with magnificent frescoes are among the finest examples of Baroque in Puglia.

Another attraction is the fish market located near the port. Its offer of fresh seafood is really varied!

Beaches and nature

Gallipoli is surrounded by beautiful beaches with white sand and turquoise water. The most famous is Baia Verde, ideal for sun worshippers and water sports enthusiasts. If you're looking for something quieter, head to Spiaggia della Purità, a beautiful beach just below the walls of the old town.

The Punta Pizzo e Isola di Sant'Andrea nature reserve is also nearby.

Gastronomy

Gallipoli is a paradise for seafood lovers. Local specialities include gamberoni rossi (red prawns), often served raw or lightly grilled. You should also try the spaghetti ai ricci di mare (spaghetti with sea urchins) or the traditional zuppa di pesce (fish soup).

This is perfectly matched with the local white wine of the Vermentino or Negroamaro varieties. Finally, try the sweet dessert pasticciotto, filled with vanilla cream, which comes from Salento.

  • Sunsets from the walls: the view of the sun setting over the Ionian Sea from the walls of the old town is unforgettable.
  • The Festival of Saint Agatha: Every February, Gallipoli celebrates the feast of the patron saint of the city with processions, fireworks and traditional dishes.
  • Nightlife: Gallipoli is also known for its vibrant nightlife in the summer. Beach clubs like Samsara Beach are renowned throughout Italy.
