It is very well located in the middle of the beautiful dramatic Dolomites, in the province of Belluno and in the Veneto region. The 1956 Winter Olympics, which were held here, gave Cortina its true lustre: it has top-notch sports facilities, so if you're not satisfied with just downhill or cross-country skiing, you can try ski jumping or bobsledding. There are downhill runs of all abilities. Almost two thirds of the slopes are the more challenging ones.
The most famous slopes in Cortina are undoubtedly the descents from Tofana (3,243m), which can be reached by cable car via Col Druscie, and Cristallo (3,216m). Good skiers will not fail to try the Olympic downhill run from Tofana. Intermediate slopes can be found on the slopes of Tondi (2,362 m) and Faloria (2,123 m), which can be reached by cable car and chairlifts. Beginners can ski on the gentle plains of Mount Pecol with its many lifts. From Passo Falzarego (2 105 m) above Cortina, a cable car leads to the Lagazuoi peak (2 800 m). From there, a 7.5 km long slope with a vertical drop of 1 100 m descends to Armentarola. From Col Druscie to Rumerla, less demanding crossings can be made.
If you decide to visit the other part of the Cortina ski area, you can ski on the slopes of Misurina ( 1,756 m). The ski area Auronzo - Misurina extends on Monte Agudo. It also includes the ski area of San Vito di Cadore with its 16 km of slopes. In total, the whole area has 140 km of slopes of varying difficulty 33% blue, 62% red, 5% black.
Misurina is situated by the lake of the same name, which is usually frozen in winter and therefore serves as an ice rink, and there are also interesting cross-country skiing trails nearby. From the car park it is possible to take the chairlift up to 2,300 m to the Col de Varda and from there climb moderate slopes back to Misurina. All the resorts Auronzo - Misurina - Cortina are passable with a Dolomiti Superski ski pass. Cross-country skiing trails cross at Lago d'Antorno.
