Brixen, or Bressanone in Italian, is the oldest town in South Tyrol and one of those places that combine Alpine comfort with Italian elegance. It lies at the confluence of the Eisack and Rienz rivers, in a valley surrounded by vineyards and the mountain peaks of the Dolomites. It's this combination that makes Brixen a destination to watch out for - historic sites, natural beauty and great food and wine all in one place.

A town with thousands of years of history

Brixen boasts a history dating back to 901, when it was first mentioned. For centuries it was an important episcopal seat, which is still reflected in its architecture today. The heart of the city is the Cathedral of the Assumption, a monumental building with rich Baroque decoration and frescoes. Right next door is the monastery with its magnificent cloister, where frescoes from the 14th century are among the most precious things South Tyrol has to offer.

Another landmark is the Hofburg, the former seat of the princely bishops. Today, it houses a museum that presents the history of the region and its ecclesiastical history. The town's towers, historic houses with arcades and picturesque streets full of cafes and shops are also worth seeing.

What to taste? A combination of the Alps and Italy

Brixen lies at the crossroads of German and Italian culture, which is of course reflected in the local cuisine. Here you can taste dumplings with smoked meat (Speckknödel), but also Tyrolean strudel. There's also classic Italian cuisine - homemade pasta, fresh cheese and crispy pizza. A speciality of the region is Vinschgauer Paarl, a dark pastry with caraway seeds and fennel, which tastes delicious with speck and cheese.

And of course wine, preferably local Sylvaner or Kerner white.

Nearby experiences: mountains, wellness and Christmas markets

Brixen is a great base for nature lovers. In winter, hikers head to the nearby resort of Plose, where you'll find not only ski slopes, but also long toboggan runs and spectacular views. In summer, the Dolomites are a paradise for hikers and cyclists.

But as well as the mountains, Brixen also offers Alpine-style relaxation - the local Acquarena water park is the ideal place to unwind after a day's excursion.

Brixen is especially magical during Advent. The Christmas market in Piazza Duomo is one of the most beautiful in the region. The smell of mulled wine, gingerbread and traditional handicrafts creates an atmosphere that keeps people coming back.
