We definitely recommend visiting this interesting place on your way from Verona or to Lago di Garda. You will find it just off the A22 motorway.
Santuario Madonna della Corona has deep historical roots dating back to the 16th century. The first chapel was built here around 1530 as a place for meditation and prayer. In 1625 a larger and more elaborate shrine was built here, which was gradually expanded and decorated in the following centuries.
The site is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who is venerated here as a protector and miraculous helper. One of the most famous legends associated with the site tells of a statue of the Virgin Mary that was miraculously transported from the island of Rhodes to this remote location in the 16th century. According to the legend, the statue was found on a cliff where it was carried by angels, reinforcing the reputation of this place as a place of miracles and spiritual power.
The architecture of Santuario Madonna della Corona is a fascinating combination of natural elements and human art. The sanctuary is partly carved into the rock and partly towers over the abyss, creating a stunning visual effect.
The interior of the church is richly decorated with frescoes and sculptures. The main attraction is the Baroque altar with the statue of Our Lady of the Corona, which attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists every year.
The Santuario Madonna della Corona is a popular place of pilgrimage, especially during major religious festivals. Many pilgrims come here on foot along the ancient pilgrimage path that leads from the nearby town of Brentino Belluno. The 'Sentiero del Pellegrino', or 'Sentiero della Speranza' (Path of Hope), offers not only spiritual enrichment but also magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.
In addition to religious pilgrims, the sanctuary attracts nature lovers, hikers and photographers who come here to admire the panoramic views and unique architecture.
But it doesn't end with the religious complex 774 metres above sea level. If you pass through the rock tunnel and follow the asphalt road up to the top of the ridge, you will not only have a stunning view of the hillside, but also of theval'Adige valleys, but also 15 stops with life-size statues depicting moments from the Way of the Cross (La Via Crucis).
The road to heaven
How do you get to the site, you ask? There are several ways to get there - on foot, by cable car or by car. As already mentioned, one of the options is the Sentiero del Pellegrino, the pilgrimage route. In this case, take at least 5 hours and head to the village of Brentino Belluno by car. From there, it's just a flight of stairs to heaven - about 1540 steps to the pilgrimage site. The trail is only 2.5km long, but you'll climb 600m. Most of the trail is through forest or woodland, but the last third of the trail is narrower and you will have to hold on to a steel rope attached to a rock.
If you choose the easier, more comfortable and faster way - by car, go to Spiazzi. Park outside the village of Spiazzi and you will descend to the sanctuary in 10 minutes. It is also possible to take the local shuttle from Spiazzi and walk 300 metres.
The site is also accessible by cable car from the village of Ferrara di Monte Baldo, making it easier for less able-bodied visitors.
The sanctuary is open all year round and celebratory masses are held here every day. Opening times and mass schedules can be found directly on the shrine's website.
