The beautiful ancient town of Verona is located in the northern part of Italy - Veneto, on the Adige River inland, approximately 120 km from Venice (Venezia) and only 30 km from Lake Garda.
Despite its countless historical monuments, Verona is most famous for Shakespeare's most famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. In the old town, tourists can visit the Casa di Giulietta, a medieval townhouse that is said to have belonged to the Capulets, with Juliet's balcony and statue in the courtyard.
Verona is undoubtedly one of Italy's most beautiful cities, sometimes referred to as the Gateway to Italy, and in 2000 the historic centre was even designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the old part, the original moated walls, ancient castles, churches, palaces and bridges over the Adige River have been preserved.
The most famous and most visited historical building is the Arena, a huge amphitheatre from the 1st century AD, where theatre performances and concerts are still held. Almost all of it has been preserved, only the last floor, destroyed by an earthquake in 1183, is missing.
Another important monument is the Gothic castle of Scaliger, Castel Vecchio, now a gallery.
