Tropea is a town of about 6,000 inhabitants on the Tyrrhenian coast in the southern Italian province of Calabria. According to legend, it was founded by Hercules, who rested here after completing his twelve quests. In fact, however, the city has been inhabited since 1000 BC. In the 8th century AD, a bishopric was established here, and it was not until the 16th and 17th centuries that it began to flourish.
Historical and cultural treasures
Tropea is home to several historical monuments, the most important of which is the Cathedral of Tropea (Cattedrale di Maria Santissima di Romagna). This Norman cathedral dates back to the 12th century. Inside the cathedral, you can admire magnificent frescoes and works of art.
Another breathtaking place in Tropea is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, located on a rock outcrop above the sea. This Benedictine monastery, which was built in the Middle Ages, offers spectacular views of the sea and the town. It is the perfect place for a romantic stroll at sunset.
Beaches and natural beauty
Tropea offers almost 4 kilometres of white and sandy beaches. According to the Sundey Times, the beach in Tropea is one of the 20 best in Europe.
Rotonda beach is one of the most beautiful local beaches. Its white sand and crystal clear water attract visitors from all over the world. The beach is well equipped and offers ideal conditions for swimming and relaxing.
Another beautiful beach in Tropea is Michelino Beach, located near the town centre. It is surrounded by rocky cliffs and is a great place for snorkelling and discovering underwater life.
The enclosed caves ("Grotta azzura") and the narrow bays are also interesting.
Tropea is the next to Palmanova or San Leo Italy's most beautiful villages. See for yourself! In April and September you can watch the sun disappear into the crater of the Stromboli volcano from the town's viewpoints.
Local cuisine
Calabrian cuisine is known for its savoury flavours and Tropea is no exception. Local specialities include 'nduja, a spicy salami paste made from pork with chilli peppers, which can be enjoyed on bread or as part of pasta dishes.
Another popular speciality is cipolla rossa di Tropea, a sweet red and very tasty onion that is often used in salads and other dishes. Tropea onions are IGP-certified and are popular throughout Italy.
Equally popular is Vecchio Amaro del Capo, an herbal liqueur that is the result of a careful combination of more than 29 different herbs, flowers, fruits and spices, many of which grow in Calabria. The main ingredients include oranges, liquorice, mandarin oranges, chamomile.
Thanks to its location by the sea, Tropea also offers, of course, excellent seafood. Local restaurants offer a wide selection of fresh fish, shellfish and other seafood specialities. Be sure to try dishes such as pesce spada (swordfish) and calamari (cuttlefish).
