The Tremiti Islands (Isole Tremiti) are located in the Adriatic Sea about 22 km off the coast of the Italian region of Apulia. The archipelago consists of five islands: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio and Pianosa. The largest and most visited is San Domino, known for its greenery and beautiful beaches. The administrative centre is San Nicola, where the historic fortress and the monastery of Santa Maria a Mare are located. Capraia is uninhabited but attracts divers to its reefs and underwater caves. The whole archipelago belongs to the Gargano National Park and is a protected area with rich fauna and flora. The area is popular with snorkelling and diving enthusiasts thanks to its clear waters and rich underwater life. Access is possible by ferry from towns such as Termoli or Vieste. The islands retain a peaceful atmosphere and are not as touristy as other resorts in Italy. The local gastronomy focuses on fresh seafood and traditional Apulian dishes. The Tremita Islands are ideal for those looking to relax in unspoilt nature.
