Gargano, the spur of the Italian boot, is one of the most impressive coastal regions in Puglia. This peninsula is famous not only for its dramatic cliffs and wooded hills, but also for its beaches, which are among the most beautiful in all of Italy. Here's an overview of the most interesting ones.

1. Baia delle Zagare

This iconic beach is the symbol of the Gargan. It is set among white limestone cliffs and its waters are an incredible turquoise colour. The beach is famous for its two rock formations that rise out of the sea and create a fabulous scenery. Access to Baia delle Zagare is limited, providing a more peaceful atmosphere.

2. Spiaggia di Vignanotica

Located between Mattinata and Vieste, it is popular for its high white cliffs that stretch along the coast. The beach is covered with pebbles and surrounded by unspoilt nature. A path leads to the beach from the car park, giving it a secluded and authentic feel.

3. Spiaggia di Pizzomunno

This beach near Vieste is named after the iconic monolithic formation of Pizzomunno, which rises on its edge. The sandy beach is ideal for families with children thanks to its gradual entry into the water and its proximity to municipal services.

4. Spiaggia di Mattinatella

7. Tremites Islands

If you crave beaches away from the mainland, the Tremiti Islands are a great choice. On the islands of San Domino and San Nicola you'll find small but charming beaches with turquoise waters and views of unspoilt nature.

Tips for visitors

  • Boat trips. Organised excursions are recommended, as they also take you to the beautiful sea caves.
  • Beach shoes: many of the beaches on the Gargan are pebbly, so it's a good idea to pack comfortable water shoes.
  • Period of visit: The best time to visit is during the off-peak season (May, June, September) when you can enjoy more tranquility and less crowded beaches.

The beaches of the Gargan are a real gem of Italy, offering a variety of different types of beaches from romantic coves to vast sandy shores. Whichever one you choose, each one offers a unique experience and an unforgettable contact with nature.
