Syracuse is located in the southeast of Sicily and is one of the most important historical cities of the island. The historic centre is located on the island of Ortigia, where the cathedral, built on the foundations of an ancient temple, stands. Here you will also find the Arethusa Spring, associated with Greek myths. The Archaeological Park of Naples includes a Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre and a rock cave known as the Ear of Dionysus. Syracuse is also the birthplace of the famous mathematician Archimedes. The city has a picturesque coastline with promenades and views of the Ionian Sea. The Paolo Orsi Museum displays archaeological finds from all over the region. A traditional dish is pasta alla Siracusana with tomatoes, olives and capers. Syracuse has a rich nightlife, especially in the Ortigia area. The harbour offers boat trips around the surrounding bays.
