The medieval town Scalea is one of the most famous and the most frequently visited places in the southern Italy - Calabria. The name comes from the terraces - stairs - in the hills, where the town was built.
Scalea itself consists of two parts: Scalea Vecchia – the old part of the town on the hill with an ancient Norman castle, tiny narrow street, palaces, portals, churches and the new Scalea Nuova with modern hotels and apartments, shops, bars and cake shops. There are large markets every monday morning in the town.
Scalea is a popular place for vacation also because of its long hot summers and the relatively short winters.
