The medieval town of Scalea is one of the most famous and most visited places in southern Italy - Calabria. The name derives from the terraces - steps - on the hills where the town was built.
Scalea itself is divided into two parts: Scalea Vecchia - the old part of town on the hill with the old Norman castle, narrow streets, palaces, portals, churches, and Scalea Nuova with modern hotels and apartments, shops, bars and patisseries. Every Monday morning there is a large market in the town.
With its long hot summers and short mild winters, Scalea is a popular place for summer holidays.
