On the slopes of Monte Pirchiriano in the Piedmont region you will find one of the most fascinating places in Italy - Sacra di San Michele. This ancient monastery, which inspired Umberto Eco to write his famous novel "The Nameno Rose", is not only an important historical monument, but also a place steeped in myth and legend.

The birth of a monastery on top of the world

The Sacra di San Michele was built in a strategic location from where there is a panoramic view of the entire Val di Susa. The history of the monastery dates back to the 10th century, when Carthusian monks built it on the ancient path leading from France to Italy. The site had a deep spiritual significance and became a popular stop for pilgrims travelling along the famous Via Francigena towards Rome.

The building itself is impressive and awe-inspiring. The monastery is partly carved into the rock, giving the illusion of being a natural part of the mountain. The monumental staircase leading to the main entrance, known as the Staircase of the Dead, is shrouded in legend. According to one legend, the staircase is guarded by the spirits of monks who spent their lives here in prayer and work. A truly breathtaking view awaits you at the top.

Inspiration for Umberto Eco

It is no coincidence that Umberto Eco found inspiration for his famous novel in the Sacra di San Michele. The monastery has all the elements Eco incorporated into his book - mystery, medieval architecture, secret chambers and extensive libraries. The atmosphere of the place is filled with mysteries of the past that seem to be ever present in the air. You walk down the staircases that once led to the medieval libraries.

Spiritual and symbolic meaning

Sacra di San Michele is not just a tourist attraction, but a still active monastery and place of pilgrimage. Legend has it that the monastery is part of a mystical lineage that connects several shrines dedicated to the Archangel Michael, including the famous Mont-Saint-Michel in France and Monte Sant'Angelo in Puglia. According to some theories, this line has a special energy that protects Europe from evil forces.

Magical views and the beauty of nature

One of the main reasons to visit Sacra di San Michele is the incredible view of the Susa Valley. From the top of the monastery you can admire the majestic mountains of Piedmont. The whole area around the monastery is ideal for hiking and offers spectacular panoramas for nature lovers and photographers.
