The world-famous Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael
Monte Sant'Angelo is home to one of Europe's most important pilgrimage destinations, the Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael (Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo). This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been attracting pilgrims since the 5th century. Legend has it that the Archangel Michael appeared here several times, which led to the construction of a church above the cave where the apparitions are said to have taken place.
The entrance to the sanctuary, formed by a 13th century marble portal, leads to an underground cave. The atmosphere of this place, with its soft light and acoustics emphasizing every whisper, is stunning. Here you can see an altar with a relief of the Archangel Michael and other historical artefacts.
The Sanctuary of Santuario di San Michele Archangelo has become the most important monument of the city. The above-ground part, through which you enter the grotto, was built in the 13th century. On your right is a massive octagonal bell tower, also from the 13th century. The stairs descend into the cave, which serves as a chapel. Inside, there are remarkable remains of fresco decorations and a bishop's seat dating from the 11th century. In 1987, Pope John Paul II also visited the sanctuary.
