The important town of Monte Sant'Angelo, with 14,000 inhabitants, is situated at an altitude of nearly 800 metres above sea level, the highest point in the southern part of the Gargano peninsula. It is situated on the edge of the Foresta Umbra Park and offers a magnificent view of the Gulf of Manfredon.

Monte Sant'Angelo is approximately 54 km from Foggia and 15 km from Manfredonia. The mountain on which the town is situated is limestone and is therefore made up of many caves. Monte Sant'Angelo is one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Italy, according to legend, it was the site of the 5th century. in the 5th century, the Archangel Michael appeared to the cave in the mountain and interpreted the divine command to turn the cave into a Christian temple. This sanctuary, Santuario di San Michele Archangelo, has become the most important monument of the city. The above-ground part through which you enter the cave was built in the 13th century. On your right is a massive octagonal bell tower, also from the 13th century. The stairs descend into the cave, which serves as a chapel. Inside, there are remarkable remains of fresco decorations and a bishop's seat dating from the 11th century. In 1987, Pope John Paul II also visited the sanctuary.

Another important monument of Monte Sant'Angelo is the Norman-Aragonese castle from the 10th century, rebuilt during the reign of Federico II. This castle can be reached via a now dry moat. Not far from the sanctuary is the baptistery, inside which is the tomb of the Lombard King Rothari. Next door is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. In the southern part of the city we find the Junno district, which is famous for its terraced houses. Monte Sant'Angelo is an ideal place to spend a holiday or a long weekend. Here you can combine the knowledge of local culture, history and nature with relaxation and tasting local specialities.
