Maratea

Basilicata - Porto di Maratea

Maratea is a town located in the Basilicata region, in the province of Potenza. It is the only town of this region located on the Tyrrhenian coast. Thanks to its magnificent scenery and coastline, it is called the "Pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea".

Maratea is famous for its historic centre, where you will be captivated by its narrow streets, ancient churches and picturesque squares. The dominant feature of the town, however, is the monumental statue of Jesus the Saviour, which is the second largest statue of Christ in the world. It is similar to the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro. This imposing statue, 21 metres high, rises on the San Biagio mountain and offers a panoramic view of the whole area.

Pilgrims from all over the world come to worship here. The statue of Jesus the Saviour was built in pure marble in 1965 by the Florentine sculptor Bruno Innocenti.

The rocky coastline of Maratea, about 32 km long, is dotted with small coves and hidden beaches, ideal for nature lovers and quiet relaxation. The crystal clear sea is a paradise for divers and swimmers. The most famous beaches are Spiaggia Nera, known for its black sand, and Spiaggia di Fiumicello, popular for its fine pebble beach.

Maratea also has its own marina for approximately 200 boats. There are six watchtowers dating from the 16th-17th centuries.

In addition to its natural beauty, Maratea also offers a rich cultural history. The town is home to many historical monuments, such as the Church of San Biagio, built on the remains of an ancient temple, and the Convent of San Francesco, which dates back to the 16th century.maratee is also called the city of "44 churches", as even in such a small town we can find many little churches, shrines or temples in different historical styles.

Maratee also regularly hosts various cultural and gastronomic festivals that attract visitors from all over the world.

Maratea is the ideal place for those looking for a combination of history, culture and natural beauty. It is a place where you can lose yourself in the magic of the past while enjoying the tranquillity and beauty of nature.
