Forte di Bard: Secrets and legends of the castle

Fort Bard

If you are looking for a magical place where history meets nature and adventure, then visit Forte di Bard in the heart of Valle d'Aosta. This castle, majestically elevated above the Dora Baltea river, not only protected the strategic route to Italy, but also hides fascinating stories that give this place an unforgettable atmosphere.

Legend has it that the Forte di Bard was built on the site of an ancient Celtic settlement. Many believe that the souls of these ancient inhabitants still roam the underground passages of the fortress. If you take a night walk around the fort, you may hear whispers of the past.

The fort was built between 1830 and 1838, designed by architect Antonio Pons, who created a structure that was both defensive and aesthetic. It is made up of three main levels: the Opera Ferdinando, the Opera Vittorio and the Opera Carlo Alberto, each with its own defensive systems. This fortress is spread over 400 metres and there are cable cars and hiking trails leading to its summit. Fort Bard is also the starting point for various hiking trails and scenic routes in the surrounding mountains. Guided tours are also available to give visitors a deeper insight into the military and cultural history of the fort.

One of the most important battles fought here was Napoleon's invasion in 1800. Although the fortress was not in good condition at the time, the 400 soldiers defending it managed to hold back Napoleon's army (numbering 40,000 men) for two weeks, delaying his advance into Italy. Napoleon was so incensed by this delay that he ordered the fortress completely destroyed. The fort was later rebuilt by the Austrian army in 1830.
