If you venture inland in Sicily, away from the busy tourist coasts, you will discover the charming town of Centuripe. Perched high on a hill, it offers views that take your breath away. This extraordinary jewel between Etna and the Simeto valley will surprise you with its unique history, culture and atmosphere.

Centuripe is often called "the star of Sicily" because of its unusual shape. Seen from above, it resembles a five-pointed star or a human figure with arms and legs outstretched. This fascinating layout is the result of the natural topography of the terrain and centuries of urban development.

Centuripe was an important centre in Roman and Greek times. Its strategic location made it an important point during wars and trade. Archaeological finds reveal fascinating traces of the past: the remains of Roman villas, thermal baths and monumental ceramic artefacts.

One of the main attractions is the Archaeological Museum, which houses a unique collection of ancient statues, vases and other objects, including detailed mosaics and ancient tools.

One of Centuripe's biggest draws is its panoramic views. On one side is majestic Mount Etna, on the other the endless Sicilian plains. Probably the most iconic image of Centuripe is the church of Calvario, built by the builder Giovanni Battista Senfet with the material help of all the citizens who contributed to the construction by carrying the building materials up the mountain. It is a small hexagonal church with a green dome. Inside there is only a small altar with the image of the Addolorata and a statue with the Crucifix.

Life in the shadow of Mount Etna

Centuripe is a town that has retained its authentic character. The locals are proud of their traditions and hospitality. Throughout the year there are several festivals and celebrations that will draw you into the rhythm of Sicilian life. Among the most important are the festivities of Saint Prospero, the patron saint of the town, with processions, music and gastronomic experiences.

Gastronomic experiences

Tasting the local cuisine is a must. Centuripe is famous for its production of almond sweets and traditional Sicilian dishes. Try the cassatelle di ricotta (small fried bags of thin dough) or the refreshing granita, which will cool you down nicely on hot days.
