In northern Italy, on the border of the Veneto and Lombardy regions, there is a village that seems to have fallen out of a postcard - Borghetto sul Mincio. Small stone houses surrounded by greenery, old waterwheel mills and the Mincio River flowing quietly under medieval bridges create a magical atmosphere. A place where time has stood still, it attracts romantics, history lovers and those looking for peace and quiet away from the bustling cities.

History and monuments

Borghetto belongs to the town of Valeggio sul Mincio, which dominates the landscape thanks to the majestic fortress of Castello Scaligero. It was once part of the defensive system of the powerful Scaliger dynasty, which ruled Verona and the surrounding areas in the 13th and 14th centuries. Although only the ruins of the castle remain, its silhouette on the hill above the village is still impressive.

Thanks to its strategic location on the Mincio River, Borghetto was an important place in the Middle Ages for the collection of customs and the passage of troops. The old Visconti Bridge, a massive stone structure dating back to the 14th century, is still a symbol of the village and offers magnificent views of the river and the surrounding countryside.

Mills and the magic of water

Borghetto's greatest charm lies in its old water mills, which still line the banks of the river. Originally, the millers processed grain and later silk here, but today these buildings have been converted into picturesque restaurants and guesthouses that invite a romantic stay.

Walking on the stone footbridges and bridges between these historic houses is an experience in itself. The water here is not just decoration - it adds life to the place and creates a calming atmosphere that makes Borghetto one of the most romantic places in Italy.

A love story on a plate

Borghetto is not only a feast for the eyes, it is also a paradise for lovers of Italian cuisine. A local speciality is Tortellini di Valeggio, delicate pasta puffs filled with meat or cheese.

According to legend, these tortellini were created as a symbol of love between a knight and a water nymph. The latter is said to have left him a silk veil at parting, which inspired the shape of the pasta. To this day, every year in June, a spectacular feast is held, the 'Festa del Nodo d'Amore' (Festival of the Love Knot).where thousands of plates of tortellini are served in the open air at a long table on the Visconti Bridge.
