In northern Italy, between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, lies a landscape synonymous with world-class sparkling wine - the Prosecco Hills. These hilly vineyards, which date back to Roman times, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 as a unique wine landscape.

A landscape shaped by wine

The Prosecco Hills area is characterised by its typical steep hills covered with carefully tended rows of vineyards. Unlike other wine-growing areas, modern technology cannot be used on a large scale here. The grapes are therefore harvested by hand, which guarantees maximum quality. The so-called 'heroic winemaking', as this demanding production is known, is one of the main reasons why the local wine retains its uniqueness.

Each hill, each terrace has its own microclimate, which gives rise to a variety of flavours and aromas. The most famous appellation of origin, Prosecco Superiore DOCG, comes from this region and includes only selected areas with the most favourable conditions for growing the Glera grape variety.

Conegliano and Valdobbiadene: The two wine-growing hearts of the region

The main towns of the region - Conegliano and Valdobbiadene - are considered centres of prosecco not only in terms of production but also tradition.

Conegliano is home to Italy's oldest winemaking school (founded in 1876), which has made a significant contribution to modern prosecco production methods. The picturesque historic centre, with its Renaissance buildings and castle, gives the town an extraordinary atmosphere.

Valdobbiadene, on the other hand, represents the very heart of the vineyards, where the finest prosecco comes from. In the surrounding hills you will find the famous "Strada del Prosecco", Italy's first wine route, which links the most important wineries in the region.

Cartizze

If there is a prosecco that is considered the absolute pinnacle of quality, it is Cartizze. This exclusive area, spread over just 107 hectares in the municipality of San Pietro di Barbozza, produces prosecco with finer bubbles, fuller flavours and a hint of fruity notes. The price per hectare of vineyard here is one of the highest in Italy, which only goes to show the uniqueness of this place.

Our tips

The best time to visit the Prosecco Hills is autumn, when the vintage is underway and the landscape is turning golden hues. In spring, the hills are alive with lush greenery and wine festivals attract sparkling wine lovers from all over the world.

Don't miss out on tastings at the wineries - many family-run businesses offer tastings right among the vineyards.

For the more active among you, there's the option of a drive along the Strada del Prosecco (a scenic route through the vineyards with breathtakingviews) or enjoy walking tours among the vineyards (such as the panoramic trail around Valdobbiadene).
