Bolzano is the capital of the autonomous province of South Tyrol in northern Italy. It lies in a valley surrounded by the Dolomites and is an important centre of culture and commerce. The city is bilingual, with both Italian and German spoken. The dominant feature is the Cathedral of the Assumption with its Gothic tower. A popular attraction is the Archaeological Museum with the mummy of Ötzi, the ice man. The main square, Piazza Walther, is the centre of social life.
