Just a few kilometres from Otranto in south-eastern Italy is a place that will enchant you with its vibrant colours and unique atmosphere - Cava di Bauxite. This former bauxite quarry has become one of the most sought-after natural attractions in Puglia. Mining operations ended here in the 1970s, and then nature took the site back under its wing and created something extraordinary.

History and natural phenomenon

Bauxite was mined in this quarry as the main raw material for the production of aluminium. After mining ceased, the area was left to nature, which gradually began to transform the abandoned quarry walls into an extraordinary work of art. Due to groundwater and rainfall, a small lake has been created in the centre of the quarry, whose water has a distinctive green to emerald hue. The colour contrast between the red and orange quarry walls and the bright green of the pond is breathtaking.

What makes Cava di Bauxite unique?

The rich shades of red, orange and yellow around the pond change according to the angle of the sun's rays, creating the illusion that you are looking at another world. The red walls are the result of the naturally high iron content of the soil, while the pond is rich in minerals that give it its unique colour.

Although Cava di Bauxite is a popular tourist destination, the place retains a peaceful and almost mystical atmosphere that immediately draws you in.

Activities in the surroundings

Cava di Bauxite is a paradise for photography enthusiasts. The contrasting colours and wild vegetation create beautiful scenery.

We recommend combining a visit to the quarry with a visit to Otranto, a town rich in history and a beautiful cathedral with a unique mosaic floor. And if you get tired of the town too, some of the most beautiful beaches at Lago di Alimini are nearby.

How to get here?

Cava di Bauxite is easily accessible by car or bike. The quarry is just a few minutes drive from Otranto and is marked by tourist signs. Although entry is free, it is advisable to wear sturdy shoes as the terrain can be rocky.

Cava di Bauxite is a place where nature has transformed an industrial area into a unique geological wonder. If you are looking for something extraordinary during your journey in Puglia, this quarry is an ideal stop that will remain in your memory thanks to its unrepeatable beauty.
