La Cattolica was built in the 9th or 10th century, when Calabria was part of the Byzantine Empire. The church is small - it can only fit a few people - but its architecture is a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. The five characteristic domes and symmetrical plan are reminiscent of Greek Orthodox churches, while the details in the masonry show Arabic influence.
Inside, stunning frescoes have survived, although time and humidity have taken away some of their beauty. Paintings of saints, geometric patterns and inscriptions in Greek and Latin show how cosmopolitan a place Stilo once was.

La Cattolica is not just a monument, it is a symbol of the city. Everyone who comes to Stilo heads here, to the top of the cliff, to see this architectural gem and enjoy the view of the mountains and the sea. It's a place where you can feel the history in every stone.
Why is it worth a visit?
- It is one of the best preserved Byzantine monuments in Italy.
- The combination of Greek, Arabic and Latin styles is absolutely unique.
- It is small, intimate and has an unforgettable atmosphere.
- The view from the church is one of the ones you will remember forever.
Tip for the end
The best time to visit is in the early evening, when the whole landscape is bathed in golden tones. And if you're lucky, you might find yourself all alone - just you, the wind and the thousand-year-old walls of La Cattolica.
