Alpe Cimbra is an area spread over the plateau of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna, where peaks such as Monte Maggio (1,850 metres) and Monte Cornetto (2,060 metres) rise. Here you will find the unique ski mountaineering circuit Skitour dei Forti, which is famous not only among experienced mountaineers but also among enthusiasts who want to discover the beauty of winter nature. The name "dei Forti" refers to the many historic World War I forts that line the route. These ancient buildings were once important military points.
The forts of the Skitour dei Forti are scattered on a plateau in the east of the Trentino region, between the towns of Trento and Vicenza.
The route of the Skitour dei Forti is varied and leads through snow-covered forests, open alpine plains and steep slopes. During the climb you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and deep valleys.
The most important forts along the Skitour dei Forti
- Forte Belvedere Gschwent
The most famous of the forts is Forte Belvedere Gschwent, located near Lavarone. This fort was built between 1908 and 1912 and served as the main Austro-Hungarian fortress in the region. It is one of the best preserved forts and is now a museum. It offers not only a glimpse into the past, but also spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The fortress rises to a height of about 1,177 metres and is surrounded by dense forests. -
Forte Dosso delle Somme
This fortress is located in the Folgaria area, at an altitude of about 1 670 metres. It was built on the peak of the same name, Dosso delle Somme, which is an important place in the Skitour dei Forti. Its strategic position gave a view over the whole valley and was an important defensive point. Although nowadays it is much damaged, its ruins are still impressive and popular with visitors.
-
Forte Cherle (San Sebastiano)
This fortress lies to the north-east of Folgaria and was built on the Cherle hill at an altitude of about 1,440 metres. It was part of a system of forts that protected the approaches to Trentino. Although only ruins remain today, its massive walls and extensive underground passages testify to its importance during the war. -
Forte Sommo Alto
This fortress is another in a series of Austro-Hungarian fortifications and is located on the top of the Sommo Alto (1,614 metres above sea level). It is just a short distance from Folgaria and its position gave views over the Astico Valley and the Val d'Assa. The fortress has been partially destroyed, but its remains are still impressive.
