The Trail of the Gods, or Sentiero degli Dei, is considered one of the most fascinating hiking trails in Italy and perhaps the world. The path offers breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Winding along the dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, this path connects the villages of Bomerano (part of Agerola) and Nocelle, which lies above the famous Positano.

Myths and history of the trail

The name "Path of the Gods" refers to Greek mythology. According to legend, it was along this path that the gods descended from the heavens to help Odysseus find his way home. And when you stand on this trail yourself, you'll understand why it's associated with the gods - its views and atmosphere seem truly otherworldly.

Historically, the trail served as a link between isolated villages in the region, where roads were often the only means of transport. Today, the trail is a magnet for nature lovers, hikers and photographers.

What can you expect along the route?

The route is approximately 7 kilometres long and can be completed in 2-4 hours, depending on your pace and the number of stops to take photos or rest. Although not technically demanding, it requires good footwear, basic fitness and caution - especially if you suffer from a fear of heights, as some parts of the trail are high above sea level.

Along the way, you'll see the clear Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Capri on the horizon and picturesque villages like Praiano and Positano scattered below. The trail leads through a Mediterranean landscape full of wild herbs, flowers and scrub. You'll often spot eagles, lizards or ibex, as well as ancient chapels, small farms and abandoned stone houses that recall the area's past.

Start and end of the route

  • Start in Bomerano: It is recommended to start in Bomerano, which can be easily reached by bus from Amalfi or Naples. The route is mostly downhill and therefore less demanding.
  • End in Nocelle: After finishing the route in Nocelle, you have the option of going down to Positano (approximately 1700 steps) where buses run back or you can stay and enjoy the beautiful beaches and restaurants.

Practical tips

The best time to visit is spring (April-June) or autumn (September-October), when the weather is pleasant and the surrounding nature is in full bloom. In summer it can be hot and the trail crowded with tourists.

Comfortable hiking boots, water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat are a must. A camera is also recommended - you'll want to keep it handy at all times!

The trail is well marked, but keep in mind that there are no guardrails on some sections. If you are traveling with children, use extra caution.

Gastronomic experiences along the way

Along the trail or at the end of the trail, you will find several local restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy traditional Amalfi specialties. We recommend trying lemon sorbetto, homemade limoncello or fresh seafood.

If you're planning a holiday on the Amalfi Coast, definitely include this route in your itinerary.
