The lights of the Luci d'Artista Festival were first switched on in 2006, inspired by a similar festival in Turin. While the Northern Italian version emphasizes modern art and conceptual installations, Salerno chose to bet on fairy tale themes, romance and magic. The festival has gradually become iconic and is now one of the biggest and most famous light events in Italy.
Every year the festival brings a new theme that inspires the light installations placed around the city. Among the most popular themes are:
- Fairy tale characters - giant unicorns, dragons, mermaids and characters from classic stories.
- Celestial scenery - starry skies, constellations and the sun lighting up the squares.
- Natural elements - forests, flower gardens and waterfalls made of thousands of lights.
The city's main thoroughfare, Via Mercanti, is transformed into a glowing tunnel, while Piazza Flavio Gioia often serves as the site for spectacular central installations. On Trieste's Lungomare waterfront, you can find light displays inspired by the sea and its inhabitants.
Every day from 17:00, the main street, the municipal villa, the square and the main streets of the city light up with spectacular Christmas lights .
Accompanying programme
The festival is complemented by a rich accompanying programme. Christmas markets full of local produce, concerts and theatre performances add another dimension to the already magical atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy typical sweets such as sfogliatella or zeppole and taste the famous local limoncello.
Practical information
- Date: the festival usually starts in November and lasts until January. The biggest rush of visitors is during the Christmas holidays, so it's worth planning a visit outside the peak season.
- Transport: Salerno is easily accessible from Naples by train or car. During the festival, it's best to leave your car in outlying car parks and use the shuttle service.
