1. Toll gates and payment methods
On Italian motorways, drivers pay tolls based on distance travelled. When entering the motorway, a ticket is collected at a toll gate, which records the point of entry. When leaving the motorway at the exit toll gate, the driver hands over the ticket and pays a fee corresponding to the distance travelled. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit cards or mobile phone.
2. Telepass
For frequent drivers or those who prefer convenience and speed, the Telepass system is available. This is a small device that attaches to the windscreen of the vehicle and allows automatic payment of tolls when passing through special Telepass lanes without stopping. The toll is then periodically deducted from a pre-registered bank account. Telepass also offers other services such as discounts on tolls and access to urban restricted zones.
3. Payment via the internet and mobile apps
Modern technology offers additional ways to pay tolls. Some services allow online payment of tolls via websites or mobile apps (Muovy - for both Android and Apple), which is particularly suitable for drivers who prefer digital payments or who plan their journey in advance. If you choose to pay tolls via Google Pay, select the window marked "Carte" at the exit of the motorway.
Missing toll payment
Failed to pay for a section of motorway you've driven for some reason? After a certain period of time, the ticket office will print a ticket with information for later payment of the toll - "Mancato pagamento". You can make this payment by bank transfer (the payment information is shown directly on the ticket from the ticket office), or you can pay it immediately in cash or by card at the toll gate office (usually located in the building on the right-hand side of the road). If neither option suits you, you can also pay the toll online.
We strongly recommend that you always pay the toll within 15 days of driving. Otherwise, you can expect a registered letter with a fine of between €87 and €344.
