Ferrara is a historic town in the Emilia-Romagna region, famous for its Renaissance architecture and well-preserved fortifications. The dominant feature of the city is the Castello Estense, a massive 14th-century water castle that once served as the residence of the d'Este family. The city is famous for its wide boulevards and its planned urban structure, which has earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Other notable landmarks include St George's Cathedral, with its imposing façade combining Romanesque and Gothic styles. Ferrara is known as a cultural centre with a rich history of art and literature, associated for example with the poet Torquato Tasso. Major festivals are held here every year, including the famous Palio di Ferrara, which is considered the oldest horse race in Italy. Ferrara is also famous for its gastronomy, such as the traditional pasta cappellacci di zucca stuffed with pumpkin filling.
