When you say Tuscany, most people think of vineyards, picturesque villages and the charm of the Italian countryside. But Montepulciano, a hilltop town nestled between the Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana, is more than just a postcard idyll. Great wine, original races, interesting sights... Experience it for yourself!

Tuscany's Montepulciano boasts a rich history dating back to Etruscan times. During the Renaissance, the town experienced its peak, which is evident in its architecture. A stroll along the main Corso street gives you an experience from another era - the Renaissance palazzoce, the charming Piazza Grande (seen above) and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, or Duomo of Montepulciano.

Not to be forgotten is the Basilica of Madonna di San Biagio, located on the road to Chianciano outside the city. It is a typical Tuscan building from the 16th century. The exterior, with two bell towers, is made of white travertine (a rock similar to limestone).

And the town itself looks familiar? You might remember it from the movie Twilight: New Moon, which was filmed here.

The wine that writes stories

Beneath Montepulciano lies a world that is as fascinating as what's happening on the surface. Historic wine cellars, such as the Cantina de' Ricci or Contucci, carved in stone, still hidehold barrels full of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Italy's most famous red wines. During the tour, you will not only get a glimpse into the secrets of the production of this noble drink, but you can also enjoy a tasting in an authentic setting where the smell of wood, stone and wine creates an unforgettable atmosphere. All this only confirms that Montepulciano is a true paradise for wine lovers.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Italy's most important red wines, has been produced here for centuries. The local vineyards combine tradition and innovation, making wine tasting right in the cellars of the historic palaces an experience worth having.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has the status of Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita (DOCG - the highest designation that an Italian wine can obtainand guarantees the highest standard of quality and regional authenticity) and is one of the main red wines of Tuscany, along with Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti Classico.

A symphony of flavours

The local cuisine is as unforgettable as the wine. Homemade pici pasta (similar to spaghetti) served with wild boar sauce, cheeses pecorino from nearby Pienza and the dessert cantucci with Tuscan vin santo wine create a perfect symphony of flavours.

Tradition and culture

Montepulciano is alive with tradition. Every summer it hosts the historic Bravio delle Botti, a race in which competitors try to push 80kg barrels uphill from Colonna del Marzocco to Piazza Grande - a route of around 1800m. This race is not only a celebration of skill and strength, but also an expression of a community that holds fast to its traditions.
