Bari is a city that smells of fabric softener, coffee, sea and pasta. Food is not just a necessity here - it's part of life, tradition and socialising. If you're spending a day or a weekend here, we've got tips on three places to eat really well - from breakfast to dinner. We've checked for you!

Veronero Stanzacaffè - the best start to the day

Via Pier l'Eremita 19, Bari

Mornings in Bari start at Veronero. It's a café where the aroma of freshly ground coffee mixes with the smell of sweet stuffed cornetti. Locals come here for both a quick espresso at the counter and a slower breakfast with a croissant at the table.

Here, be sure to get a cornetto with pistachio cream (stuffed really generously), an espresso or cappuccino from the in-house roaster, and fresh orange juice

Why here:
Fine coffee, a pleasant atmosphere and "good morning" in its purest form. Ideal before a stroll through the old town or to St. Nicholas Basilica.

Tip: Come between 8:00-9:00. Later, the croissants sell out quickly.

Mastro Ciccio - street-food you simply must try

Address: Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 15, Bari

This is a legend. Mastro Ciccio is the place where "fast food" turns into a small gastronomic experience. The panini here are huge, creative and built on local ingredients.

What to eat:

  • Panino with octopus and burrata (yes, it's as good as it sounds. Or not, even better!)

  • Ideally straight off the menu, where you get a box of small fried clams and balls similar to croquettes, but not made of potatoes, along with the panino with octopus! They're made of bread. You'll love the taste!

Why here:
Bold flavors, great price, and no pretentiousness. Just good food that you take in your hand and you can go on discovering Bari.

Tip: Don't let the queue put you off - it goes fast.

Orecchietteria San Nicola - dinner like grandma's

Address

Here you will taste Bari in its purest form. A small osteria specialising in orecchiette - pasta made under the fingers of local women, with patience and generations of experience.

What to eat:

  • Orecchiette con cime di rapa - a traditional Apulian dish, orecchiette with broccoli

  • Or orecchiette with tomatoes and burrata, if you prefer more delicate flavours

Why go here:
Simple ingredients but a taste you won't forget. It's exactly the kind of cuisine that makes you fall in love with Apuglia!

Tip: Either book a place here or come outside of peak dinner hours (around 7pm).
