The history of Venzone - from the Romans to the Middle Ages
The first mentions of Venzone date back to the Roman Empire, when it was an important trading hub on the route between the Adriatic and Central Europe. During the Middle Ages, the town grew and acquired its typical appearance.
The impressive 13th-century fortifications that surround the historic centre can still be admired today and are among the best preserved examples of military architecture in northern Italy. At the heart of the city is Piazza Municipio with its Gothic-Renaissance town hall, and nearby is the magnificent 14th-century Duomo di Sant'Andrea Apostolo.
Earthquake and reconstruction - a marvel of modern architecture
The year 1976 has gone down in the history of Venzone as the most tragic moment of its existence. A strong earthquake almost flattened the town. Yet it became a symbol of determination - thanks to a special method, Venzone was carefully rebuilt stone by stone.
Today, this reconstruction is considered a model example of the restoration of historic towns and Venzone is a protected national monument. Visitors find it fascinating to know that the streets they pass through have been rebuilt with the same care as they once were.
The town of lavender and the famous festival
In recent years, Venzone has earned a reputation as the city of lavender. Thanks to the favourable climate, lavender thrives here and its purple flowers and intoxicating scent flood the whole town in summer.
The biggest attraction is the annual Lavender Festival (Festa della Lavanda), which takes place in July. The streets and squares are transformed into a lavender kingdom, with markets selling lavender products from essential oils and cosmetics to sweets and liqueurs. Visitors can also take a peek at the lavender fields in the area and try their harvest under the supervision of local farmers.
Tradition and culture
Lavender is more than just a flower in Venzone - it's part of the local identity. You'll find it in the cuisine (desserts, liqueurs, homemade pastries), in traditional medicine and in the daily lives of the inhabitants.
In addition to lavender, the Mummies of Venzone, kept in the Chapel of San Michele, are also worth seeing. These naturally mummified bodies from the 14th-19th centuries are a unique historical curiosity that attracts visitors from all over the world.
Practical tips for visitors
The best time to visit is summer, when the lavender blooms and festivals are held, or autumn, when gastronomic festivals take place. We recommend trying the local speciality "lavandino", a dessert flavoured with lavender, and the wines of the Friuli region.
The area around Venzone is also worth a visit - just a few kilometres away is the Parco Naturale delle Prealpi Giulie, with hiking and mountain hikes.
