Venice, a city full of history and culture, is also the birthplace of one of the most legendary men. Famous for his ability to charm and seduce women, Giacomo Casanova was not only a lover but also a writer, philosopher and adventurer. And Venice, where his stories were set, remains the place to discover his trail to this day.

Who was Casanova?

Born in Venice in 1725, Giacomo Casanova was a Venetian adventurer, writer and diplomat whose name has become synonymous with seducer. Although later legends portray him almost as a caricature of the irresistible lover, he was in fact an extremely well-educated man with a colourful life - he travelled all over Europe, was acquainted with many of the great figures of his day (including Voltaire and Catherine the Great), was imprisoned in the Piombini in Venice and famously escaped. His most famous work is his extensive memoir Histoire de ma vie, which not only charts his amorous adventures but also presents a valuable picture of life in the 18th century.

Casanova and Venice: Where it all began

If you want to follow in Casanova's footsteps, Venice offers many fascinating places that are inextricably linked to his life. Start your journey at Palazzo Malipiero, the palace where Casanova lived and which today serves as a point of interest on the map for all his fans. Located in the heart of Venice's San Marco district, this palace gives a unique insight into what life as a nobleman in 18th century Venice might have been like.

Casanova was a legend not only for his love affairs, but also for his ability to maneuver his way into the lives of powerful people, making him not only a seducer but also a man who knew how to exploit political relationships. To explore the places where his loves and mysteries were born, head to the church of Santa Maria della Salute. This magnificent church on the banks of the Grand Canal is considered one of the most romantic places in Venice.

Also go to Campo San Stefano, where Casanova is said to have often discussed philosophy, politics and love affairs. You'll find this little square in the heart of Venice's historic centre and it's definitely a great place to stop.

Casanova and the prison

Casanova was imprisoned many times - and Venice was no exception. In 1755, Casanova was imprisoned in the very Venetian prison at Palazzo Ducale, which was connected to the prison by the Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs). This bridge, known for its dark history, connects the Doge's Palace to the prison and is one of the most impressive places in Venice. Its name is linked to the last glimpse of the city and the sigh of the prisoners before they were taken to the dark dungeons. Casanova, however, seized a unique opportunity and managed to break out of prison. His escape is part of his legend.
