A Town That Used to Be an Island
One of the most interesting facts about Sestri Levante is how it came to be. The historic center stands on what was once an island, which over the centuries was gradually connected to the mainland by sediment and sand. This created two bays, which today are among the town’s most iconic landmarks.
It is precisely this unusual location that gives Sestri Levante its unique character. On one side, you’ll find a quiet, romantic cove; on the other, a livelier beachfront.
Baia del Silenzio—one of Liguria’s most beautiful bays
The most famous spot in town is undoubtedly Baia del Silenzio, or the Bay of Silence.
The small sandy beach is surrounded by pastel-colored houses. The water here is usually calm, and thanks to its sheltered location, the cove feels almost like a natural swimming pool.
Perched on a rock in Baia del Silenzio stands the bronze statue Il Pescatorello, which commemorates Sestri Levante’s fishing heritage. It was created by the German sculptor Leonardo Lustig, who captured a young fisherman casting his net into the sea. Today, it is one of the town’s most famous symbols and a favorite spot for photographers.
Baia delle Favole—the fairy-tale face of Sestri Levante
On the opposite side of town lies Baia delle Favole, or Fairy Tale Bay.
It is larger, livelier, and especially popular among families with children. A promenade lined with restaurants, cafés, and palm trees runs along the coast. It is here that you can enjoy the typical atmosphere of an Italian seaside resort.
The bay’s name is no coincidence. It commemorates the visit of the famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, who visited the town and whose name remains associated with Sestri Levante to this day.
A Historic Center Full of Color and Atmosphere
The heart of the town consists of narrow streets between the two bays, colorful facades, small shops, cafés, and little squares. Unlike more well-known tourist destinations, here you can still observe the everyday life of the locals. In the evening, the historic center transforms into a pleasant place to take a stroll, sit down with a glass of wine, or sample fresh seafood.
The Church of San Nicolò and the Most Beautiful View of the City
Perched on a promontory between the two bays stands the Romanesque Church of San Nicolò dell’Isola. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city and offers a magnificent view of both bays at the same time. It is from here that the iconic photos of Sestri Levante—which you often see in travel guides—are taken. If you want to understand why the city is called the “city of two seas,” all you have to do is climb up here.
A Trip to Punta Manara
Nature lovers shouldn’t miss the hike up to Punta Manara. The trail winds through olive groves, pine forests, and Mediterranean vegetation. The reward is a panoramic view of the Ligurian coast, which is among the most beautiful in this part of the region.
On a clear day, you can see far along the coast toward Portofino and the Cinque Terre area. Even casual hikers can manage this trip, and it’s definitely worth the effort.
