If you're looking for a cultural highlight on your holiday in Italy, here's a tip from Verona. Piazza Brà is home to a beautiful ancient amphitheatre where evening opera performances are held throughout the summer.

Arena

Verona' s ancient amphitheatre (completed in the first half of the 1st century AD) is the third largest in the world, after the Roman Colosseum and the amphitheatre at Santa Maria Capua Vetere near Naples. At its most crowded, the arena is said to have held up to 30,000 spectators, allall the inhabitants of ancient Verona, plus visitors from all over the Veneto. They came here to watch battles and gladiatorial fights. The arena was also used for various purposes, such as public executions, bullfights, fairs, etc.

In the 12th century it was seriously damaged by an earthquake. In the middle of the 15th century, it was declared a monument for the first time and a slow process of reconstruction began, which continued after World War II. Thanks to its excellent acoustics, the arena has now become a regular venue for major opera performances and modern music concerts.
