Gradara - a fairytale castle
Just a few kilometres from Cattolica you'll find Gradara, a medieval fortress that looks like something out of a fairy tale. It is here that legend has it that the tragic love of Francesca and Paolo, immortalised by Dante Alighieri himself, took place. Wander the walls, take a peek inside the period rooms and have a romantic dinner in the evening with a view of the sunset over the hills.
Our tip: Try visiting Gradara in the evening, when the castle is beautifully lit and the streets smell of grilled fish and rosemary.
San Marino - a state within a state
From Rimini it's just a short drive to San Marino, one of the smallest states in the world. This place is a dream come true for any lover of views - just walk up to one of the three towers and you'll have the whole coast and hinterland under your feet. Besides the panoramas, you can shop for souvenirs (interestingly cheap thanks to special taxes) or just wander the narrow streets.
Our tip: Try going early in the morning or late in the evening - you'll avoid the crowds and enjoy the magical atmosphere of the ancient walls almost on your own.
Monte San Bartolo - wild nature just a short walk from the beach
Between Pesaro and Cattolica lies the Monte San Bartolo Nature Park, a great alternative to the crowded beaches. You can cycle or walk along paths with sea views, discover hidden coves and even come across wild orchids. Perfect for a half-day trip when you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Our tip: Take a picnic with you - sitting on a cliff overlooking the azure sea and eating fresh focaccia is a priceless experience.
Urbino
If you want to venture a little further afield, try Urbino - a town where time stood still sometime in the 15th century. It's the hometown of painter Raffaele, so art lovers will be in for a treat, but even if you don't collect paintings, this town has charm. the narrow streets, the historic university and, above all, the majestic Palazzo Ducale, one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Italy.
Our tip: Go to the local market and try casciotta di Urbino, a traditional cheese that has been made here for centuries.
Santarcangelo di Romagna - a village full of surprises
A short distance from Rimini lies the unassuming town of Santarcangelo, which is a bit of a mystery. A network of underground tunnels and cellars stretches beneath the entire historic centre, the origins of which are still unclear. Above ground, you'll find a beautiful square with cafés, ancient houses and lots of art workshops.
Our tip: In summer, there are often small festivals and markets with local specialities - perfect for an evening out with wine and cheese tasting.
