From ball game to opera
The Sferisterio was created in 1829 thanks to the initiative of the wealthy citizens of Macerata. They wanted a dignified place for the popular sport of the time - pallone col bracciale, a ball game that combined speed, strength and elegance.
The architect Ireneo Aleandri designed an arena in the shape of a huge rectangular esplanade with one semicircular wall almost 18 metres high. The auditorium had room for up to 10,000 spectators - an incredible number for the time.
But the popularity of the play soon waned and the Sferisterio found a new destiny - it became a theatre and concert venue.
Unique acoustics and atmosphere
What makes the Sferisterio special is its acoustics. Thanks to the monumental walls, sound travels clear and strong even without the use of modern technology. This is why the arena is now considered one of the best outdoor venues for opera festivals in Europe.
Every summer, the famous Macerata Opera Festival takes place here, bringing together the world's singing stars and thousands of visitors.
What to see today
Sferisterio is part of Macerata's charming historic centre, full of churches, palaces and narrow streets. Today you will see a magnificent 19 m high semicircular wall with arcades. The stage and auditorium area has a capacity of over 3,000 seats (in its modern form). During the season, concerts, ballet and theatre performances are held here. Acoustics and atmosphere comparable to the most famous opera houses.
During a tour of the arena outside the festival, you can enjoy its size and views of the Macerata.
