While nearby Positano and Capri attract crowds of tourists, just a few kilometres away lies a place that feels like another world. Baia di Ieranto - a quiet bay on the Sorrento Peninsula - is one of the few places on the Italian coast that can only be reached on foot. And that's what makes it such a special experience.
Baia di Ieranto is located just opposite the island of Capri and the rocky outcrop of Punta Campanella, a place that ancient myths call home to the sirens whose song nearly destroyed Odysseus.
The starting point is the small village of Nerano. From here, a trail less than 2 kilometres long descends through olive groves and typical Mediterranean vegetation. The walk takes about 40 minutes and is not suitable for strollers or bicycles, which is why Baia di Ieranto retains its wildness and tranquillity.

What is this house that towers over the bay of Baia di Ieranto, you ask? It is the remains of a former industrial building from the days when limestone was mined here.after the mining was finished, the building was abandoned and fell into disrepair until the whole area was acquired by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) - sort of the Italian equivalent of the National Monuments Institute. The latter protects and maintains the area as a reserve and an ecologically valuable area, with the aim of restoring its natural character and making it accessible to the public in accordance with the principles of sustainable tourism. The building now serves as an information and education centre, hosting occasional excursions, exhibitions or activities for schools and visitors.
An ecological sanctuary
Baia di Ieranto is a protected area managed by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano). Motor traffic, boat mooring, fishing and commercial activities are prohibited in the bay. The sea is therefore crystal clear, with anemones, sea urchins and schools of fish living under the surface. Wild rabbits or owls can be found in the area - a real, almost untouched ecosystem.

The beach in the bay is rocky, but all the cleaner and quieter for it. There's no bar or loungers, just rocks, shade from the rocks and water that envelops your feet and mind. Ideal for swimming, snorkelling or relaxing overlooking the island of Capri.
